The present paper, entitled “A Critical and Scholarly Study of Dr. Hossein Alaei’s Two-Volume Book: Tactical and Strategic Analysis and Limitations”, is a research work that examines and evaluates the two-volume book “An Analytical History of the Iran-Iraq War”.
In this study, the strengths and weaknesses of the work are analyzed from the perspectives of content critique, methodology, and sources. Alongside introducing the structure and content of each volume, the paper highlights key strengths such as historical accuracy, tactical and strategic analyses, and the use of first-hand sources. At the same time, it addresses the book’s limitations and shortcomings in analytical, comparative, and international contexts.
Moreover, the lack of a comprehensive analysis of the social, cultural, and economic dimensions, as well as the absence of a critical examination of domestic decision-making, are discussed as some of the major weaknesses of the work.
The outcome of this study, in addition to clarifying the position of Alaei’s work within the body of research on the Sacred Defense (Iran-Iraq War), offers strategies for enhancing the scientific and multi-dimensional analysis of Iraq’s imposed war against Iran. This paper can serve as a valuable reference for military historians, defense studies students, strategic analysts, and those interested in contemporary Iranian history, providing them with a deeper perspective on the book and the operational and managerial lessons derived from it.
